Personal writing: the "Explain it to me" project

Abstract

The project ‘Explain it to me’ has been developed for twelve years at the state secondary school IES VALLDEMOSSA in Barcelona. It is a palliative for the difficulties secondary school students face when expressing themselves in written language. With no confidence in their own capabilities, they copy literally what they find in their textbooks as well as classnotes. The project is presented to 15-year-old boys and girls as a rehearsal activity: one should write a lot on a given topic to be able to write much better. As this task benefits everybody, all teachers have to take part in it.
