Exposure to domestic violence is a type of abuse with consequences comparable to those of direct abuse. Two-thirds of these children and adolescents suffer mental health problems, as well as developmental, cognitive, social and school problems. But domestic violence is a silent problem, and these children arrive at child and adolescent mental health centers with a multitude of psychological symptoms that can be misdiagnosed and mistreated if the violence suffered is not detected. The Child and Youth Mental Health Center (CSMIJ) in Cornellà created a program more than 20 years ago to specifically detect, diagnose and treat mental health problems related to abuse and exposure to domestic violence. The program has been scaled up and implemented in four other CSMIJs and Day Hospitals, which, like the one in Cornellà, are part of the Hospital Sant Joan de Déu in the Barcelona community area. This paper explains the program's main characteristics and the treatments being developed.
